It was transported by rail to Jerilderie and then taken to Goolgumbla by bullock wagon.
Until 1947 it provided water to Goolgumbla Station's homestead, ram sheds and dams along a 27-mile channel system.
In 1977, due to wind damage the item was rendered unserviceable. The windmill was offered to Jerilderie as an historical exhibit by Dalgetys.
In 1979, a Local Restoration Committee resurrected it in its present position.
It is believed to be only one of 6 machines of its kind built and has been the only one of its kind in operation until January this year (2004) when its sister windmill was repaired and erected in Taroom, Qld.
The Steel Wings stands 50 feet high, has a 25ft diameter fan and a 24ft tail. Its nose plate acts as a governor and automatically turns the machine out of high winds to save damage.
It operates a 6" draw plunger pump with a 19" stroke giving 2 gallons per revolution, helping to maintain the water supply to the
